I'd always pictured Loch Ness as a little lake. In reality, it's about 36km long and contains more freshwater than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. No wonder they haven't found Nessie yet!
Posted by Karbo On the morning of the 11th, we took the train from Edinburgh north to Dingwall, a town with a population of 5,000. We were picked up by our Airbnb host, Ian, and after dropping our things off at his place he brought us back to Dingwall's main street, High Street, so that we could explore the area. On the 12th we started off with a legendary breakfast prepared by Ian. We're not going to lie, one of the reasons we booked our accommodation with Ian was because of all the rave reviews he received about his breakfast. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves. After breakfast we took the bus from Dingwall to Inverness, which is considered the capital city of the Highlands. From Inverness we took the bus to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle. There were a lot of tours to Loch Ness but since it was only a 30 minute bus ride away, we decided to go see it for ourselves. The ruins of Urquhart Castle are at the edge of the lake but we didn't feel like paying £8/pp to walk around a pile of ruins. I'd always pictured Loch Ness as a little lake. In reality, it's about 36km long and contains more freshwater than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. No wonder they haven't found Nessie yet! We decided to walk from Urquhart Castle to one of the villages that lies along the shore of Loch Ness, Drumnadrochit. We got caught in a downpour along the way but at this point we were pretty used to rain coming down, sideways, and upwards at anytime of the day and without warning. On the train ride up from Edinburgh we noticed that Scotland has lots of sheep. They were everywhere. While all the sheep were really cute we learned later that the history associated with them is quite sad. In order to accommodate the sheep during the growth of the wool industry, there was a forced mass emigration of Highland Scots in the 18th century. We saw lots of rolling hills and green fields filled with sheep but also a lower population density of people. On our last day in the Highlands we took a tour to visit the Isle of Skye and other parts of the Highlands. One of the stops was at Eilean Donan Castle, which is supposed to be one of the most photographed castles in Scotland. You can see why...it's so pretty! We also finally saw Highland Cows during our tour, which was one of my favourite experiences! The Isle of Skye is the largest island in the Inner Hebridges of Scotland. We'd heard a lot about the rugged Scottish scenery and we saw a lot of it on the island. After we returned to Inverness we had dinner and walked around the city until it was time to catch one of the last buses back to Dingwall. While waiting at the bus stop we got swarmed by a group of about 50+ high school kids; we estimated their average age at around 13. It was a noisy ride back to Dingwall and it also made us feel a bit old! Next up: Glasgow and then onto Ireland!
