It was a long day but we arrived in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, safe and sound with more stories to tell and a new experience under our belts!
Posted by Karbo On Valentine's Day, we took what has so far (knock wood) been the most uncomfortable bus ride of our trip. The "VIP" bus from Luang Prabang to Vientiane was a fully booked double decker and we had the corner seats in the very back row of the upper deck. Our driver drove like a maniac and an hour into our 10hr ride we saw thick black smoke billowing out of the engine. Luckily, our driver also turned out to be a mechanic and after he tinkered around with the engine for an hour, we were on the road again.

Posted by Karbo Originally, we hadn't put Laos into our travel itinerary. We decided that we couldn't miss it after hearing my sister rave about her visit to Laos during our stay in Hong Kong. We spent the 9th travelling from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang and applied for our visa on arrival at the Luang Prabang airport. There were a bunch of Canadians on our flight and we were all surprised to see that the visa fee for Canadians is the highest out of all visiting nationalities at a whopping $42USD!!
Posted by Jason When we were planning this RTW trip we knew there was no way we could see everything we wanted to see in one year, so we had to eliminate a significant portion of the original list of places to visit (Spain, Provence, Cinque Terre...etc). However, Angkor Wat, the ancient temple ruins just north of Siem Reap city centre, also the largest religious complex in the world, always maintained a solid spot near the top of our list, and we were excited to finally see it!
Posted by Karbo When we touched down in Phnom Penh, the first thing we noticed was how much hotter it was than Vietnam. There are also mosquitos EVERYWHERE! However, Cambodian mosquitos seem to be a lazy breed; we always saw them floating around but only received a few bites during our time in Cambodia.
Posted by Karbo We'd booked our flight from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh a few weeks in advance since we'd heard that transportation options get booked up very quickly around Tet. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in the early evening and checked into the Silverland Hotel, which was the nicest hotel we stayed in while in Vietnam because we wanted to be closer to our friends who were also in HCMC, Tanya and Jason!
