We took the red-eye flight from YVR to JFK. When we arrived in the morning of the 23rd at 7:30AM, my mom and brother-in-law were waiting to drive us to Sunnyside, where we were going to stay with Jason's friend, Raph. Like I said...we were pampered!
On the 24th, we met up with a group of friends for brunch at Norma's at Le Parker Meridien. It was a really nice place but as evidenced by the $1,000 frittata on their menu, not exactly backpacker-budget friendly. Luckily, Jason and I weren't very hungry so we shared the Arepa (Colombian corn cake, eggs sunnyside up, and chorizo). The Arepa was delicious and it was so rich we were both full afterwards. |
Jason and I like to take our time at museums, so by the time Johanne and the others had gone through the entire MoMA, we were still on our first floor! Going forward, it's probably better for us to visit museums and galleries alone so our friends don't have to wait for us.
Note: We noticed that New Yorkers really like their acronyms. From what we could gather, DUMBO = Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass, SOHO = South Of Houston Street, NOHO = North Of Houston Street, TriBeCa = Triangle Below Canal Street, Nolita = North of Little Italy, etc. Anyone know of any other NYC acronyms?
In Brooklyn we came across two of the twelve city-regulated communal water fountains located throughout NYC (NYC Water-on-the-Go). These portable water fountains are created by attaching a filter to a fire hydrant that provides clean, cold drinking water for the public (and our four-legged friends). It was a nice touch, especially on a hot summer day.
While we were in NYC we had some pretty good food. Pizza, Korean BBQ, Ramen, Bagels, home-cooked meals at Karbo's sister's house...all delicious. However, on our last day in NYC when we walked past Katz Deli on our way to lunch at Minca Ramen Factory, my life changed a little. I opted for a daikon salad at Minca so I can save my appetite for Katz. Following my friends' instruction, I ordered a pastrami sandwich on rye. It came with a hearty portion of pickles and they perfectly complemented the hot pastrami. $16 USD for a sandwich is a bit steep but I'm glad I had it. Check out the photos and salivate:
