We'd initially decided not to go to Sapa as I'd read that it gets really cold in January. However, after talking to a few locals and fellow travelers we decided it was something we had to go see.

Posted by Karbo We'd heard about how overcrowded Halong Bay was so we went with realistic expectations and had a great time!
It's overwhelming to sift through the hundreds of companies that provide tours of Halong Bay so we just went with a company that our hotel had recommended. One thing we noticed as we went through the tour itineraries is that each company provides basically the exact same itinerary, with minor adjustments. Posted by Karbo Hong Kong was our first stop in Asia after almost 4 months in Europe. We had free accommodation for 3 weeks thanks to my sister and didn't stop eating from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.
Posted by Karbo We had contemplated making a side trip from Hong Kong but the destinations we had in mind were either too cold (i.e. Beijing) or too expensive (i.e. Seoul).
Luckily for us, our friend from Vancouver, Fianna, was visiting family in Guangzhou and invited us up to spend a couple of days with her. We decided to take the direct MTR train from Kowloon to Guangzhou. It's a 2 hour ride and very convenient! |
