Posted by Karbo On our way to Munich from Berlin, we took a 1-day layover in Nuremburg to visit our friend, Charlene. We were hungry so after Char picked us up from the train station we went for burgers at Hans im Glück. Char works for Adidas and after lunch, she took us on a quick tour of the Adidas headquarters and outlet factory. The Adidas headquarters are pretty swanky and they sit across from the Puma headquarters. Adidas and Puma were created by two brothers that had started off in the shoe business together. After some bad blood between the brothers, they split up and created their own rival shoe companies. The headquarters of each company sit on opposite sides of the river of Herzogenaurach. We were able to go into the staff-only section of the Adidas outlet (Char had to scan us in with her employee pass) and we were very tempted to buy lots of Adidas goodies. We managed to practice some self-restraint as it would've been difficult to pack sneakers into our already full backpacks. Char also took us on a walking tour of the medieval city centre, which was completely destroyed during WWII. The city was rebuilt and it is absolutely beautiful! We didn't have any expectations for Nuremberg so we're very glad we took the time to visit. We also loved the Nuremburger, which is made of 3 mini bratwursts sandwiched in a bun. They're a couple of euros each and are a tasty snack while walking around town. We had our first traditional German meal at Wirtshaus Hütt'n. We took a chance and went without reservations and managed to get a table without having to wait for too long. The food was what we expected - very hearty, full of meat and starches, and delicious! Afterwards, we went to the "Peanut Bar". That's not the actual name of bar but we can't remember what it is. We call it the Peanut Bar as there's a giant pile of peanuts near the entrance, which you can use to refill the dish of peanuts at your table. After eating your peanuts, you drop the peanut husk on the floor. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend walking around barefoot in there. On the 27th Char took us on an educational tour of Nuremberg's role in Nazi Germany. We went to the Dokumentasionszentrum, which focuses on Nuremberg's role in the annual Nazi Party rallies, and Zeppelin Field. We rushed back to the city centre because we couldn't leave without one more Nuremburger! It started to pour and we got drenched looking for a Nuremburger stand, but it was all worth it. It was a whirlwind weekend in Nuremberg and we were very sad to leave and say goodbye to Char. Thank-you, Char, for your hospitality, driving us everywhere, and being an amazing tour guide!
