Posted by Karbo We arrived in Florence on the 20th and spent our first day walking around the city centre. We had dinner at Gusta Osteria. We noticed that in Italy, pasta is usually served as a starter course and comes in smaller portions than it does in Canada. The main course is usually a meat or fish dish. We opted for pasta and their famous meat balls, which were very good except that I chomped down on bits of broken glass! The owners tried to convince us that it was probably rock salt but eventually ended up replacing the dish.

We took a day trip from Florence to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. What we didn't know is that the entire Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square), which contains the Tower of Pisa, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other than the Tower of Pisa, the square contains the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistry, and the Camposanto Monumentale.
Posted by Karbo On the 24th we took a day trip to Siena. We had originally planned to take the bus from Florence but arrived at the bus station to be told that the buses weren't running that morning. This was so frustrating since we had been to the bus station the day before to confirm the bus times! We tried to get more information out of the ticket vendor but he just sat smugly behind his glass window and repeated that there were no buses. I love a lot of things about Italy but their reputation for being disorganized and chaotic is spot on!
Posted by Jason On November 17th We left Bled at 6:30am in order to catch the DRD Shuttle from Ljubljana to Mestre, a city just outside of Venice. It was the only option of land transportation we could find between the two cities, and it was a scenic ride through the Slovenian and Italian countryside.
Posted by Karbo We'd been looking forward to Bled since our trip started, so it was a bit surreal when we finally stepped off the bus and saw the lake with its landmark island. Bled is a popular tourist attraction in the summer but it was cold when we were there and the town was pretty quiet.
