My parents were also in Hong Kong at the same time so we spent a week being spoiled rotten. It was nice not having to plan each day's itinerary.
The places that stand out include:
- Hong Lin Restaurant in Mongkok (the best pineapple bun we've ever had! Crispy on the outside, light and soft on the inside)
- Se Wong Yee in Central (famous for it's snake soup, which is supposed to be really good for your health)
- Wing Hap Sing in Sheung Wan (I love clay-pot rice!)
- Australia Dairy Company in Jordan (their scrambled eggs are really popular and they make the best yinyeung [coffee with tea]!)
- Man Sing Bing Sat in Tai Hang (Dai pai dong [street] food; get the steamed minced pork with salted duck yolk!)
- Kau Kee in Central (beef brisket noodles - so tender and so full of flavour!)
- Lan Fong Yuen in Central (we visited this cafe because I'd read that Chow Yun Fat is a regular; we didn't see him :( but it's a decent HK style cafe. They have multiple locations)
- Tung Po in North Point (great place when you're with a big group or just looking for a fun place with delicious food! I think the restaurant's cuisine is mainly Guangdong seafood)
- Tim Ho Wan in Sham Shui Po (good dimsum and also the world's cheapest Michelin star restaurant)
These are just the tip of the iceberg! We forgot the names of a lot of places as well and, of course, we had many delicious home-cooked meals.
Hong Kong's answer to crowd-control is to set up barriers and turn central Hong Kong into a myriad of one-way walkways; what would normally have taken us 15 minutes became an hour-long hike where we were herded along with the rest of the partygoers.
Despite its small size, Hong Kong has a lot of different sights and neighbourhoods to explore. We made an effort to explore as much as possible!
We knew that Johnny was planning to propose to Selina before they left Hong Kong so we were trying our hardest to keep the secret whenever we all hung out. Congratulations you two!!
We've discussed whether we would ever move back to live and work in Hong Kong; for now, we agree that the pros of Vancouver's clean air and personal space outweigh Hong Kong's efficiency and low income tax. But you never know! =)
